A Watershed Moment
March 13, 2008 02:43 PM

The News
Fiji Water is developing an ambitious plan that will help ensure its product goes beyond carbon neutral. Over the next three years, FIJI Water will do this through becoming
more energy efficient, utilizing green power, reducing packaging, and investing in carbon offsets through forest based conservation projects.

Separate from its offset program, FIJI Water has made a major investment to support to protect the Sovi Basin - Fiji’s largest rain forest from logging. Located on the island of Viti Levu, the Sovi Basin spans more than 50,000 acres and provides crucial ecosystem services to the local communities.

Our Take
I applaud Fiji's efforts. I remain concerned about the general concept of moving water all around the world, but at least they are recognizing the potential negative impacts and working to offset those impacts in some positive ways.

Bob Dylan for President
March 12, 2008 03:43 PM

The News
“Come senators, congressmen,
Please heed the call,
Don't stand in the doorway,
Don't block up the hall,
For he that gets hurt,
Will be he who has stalled,
There's a battle outside,
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows,
And rattle your walls,
For the times they are a-changin'.”

‑ Bob Dylan "The times they are a-changin"

Our Take
This doesn't need my comments. As GHG legislation gets addressed in the Congress and State houses, there will be leaders and roadkill and nothing in between. Businesses are demanding action, so action there will be regardless of which political party dominates. The biggest winners, after the human race, will be businesses. The first losers in the face of legislative inaction likewise will be businesses.

The News
"The world’s forests, wetlands, and other ecosystems are under tremendous pressure due to climate change, land conversion, and many other factors," said Jonathan Lash, President, WRI. "As ecosystems degrade, companies will face operational, regulatory, and reputational risks while those that offer solutions may find new business opportunities and new sources of revenue." "Ecosystem services are often unacknowledged, yet they underpin many corporate activities," said John Ehrmann, Managing Partner of the Meridian Institute"The Corporate Ecosystem Review helped us to better understand how a number of emerging environmental changes are likely to affect our business and how our company might best position itself to respond to these changes," said Steve Hunt, Senior Vice President, Asia-Pacific, Eka Chemicals, a division of chemical giant Akzo Nobel.

Our Take
A number of forward-thinking companies are realizing that they need to plan for disruptions in business as usual even as they convert their own operations into more carbon-friendly enterprises. Link to the Corporate Ecosystem Review
